Neverwinter Nights 2 - my downfall
It's saturday night.
Some people I konw are drunk.
Some people I know are having sex.
Some people I know are both.
Where am I?
Writing the first entry of my blog, which owes its existence to one single thing: the Neverwinter Nights 2 AutoUpdate feature.
And why, you might ask? Or you might not, especially not if you're one of the people mentioned above since you'll be busy with far more interesting matters...
Because almost an hour ago, I went down to my local Blockbuster video store and bought Neverwinter Nights 2. Never really played the original, since the guys at my commune invaded my room and played it to death for the month I was in the U.S back in 2002 (which incidentally was when NWN was released)...
So now I bought it and even in a fancy "Collector's Edition" complete with NWN1+2, a silly artwook booklet and a fantastic ring which says "Lawful Good" and might easily be confused with The One Ring (tm) for LOTR (probably even more tm). Oh, and there's also some weird plastic figure of an ogre or a fire giant or some such nonsense in the box. Hooray!
But back to the issue. I installed the game and all went well. Since no-one in their right mind will intentionally leave a computer which is installing alone (after all, it might blow up, develop intelligence or get done by itself) I stayed in front of the screen, checking e-mails and writing meaningless posts on forums.
After some time of this the game finished installing. But alas, there's an AutoUpdate function and THAT takes time too... plenty of time, apparently.
Because when it had reached 38% of updating some big, chunky game file I despaired. Not totally, mind you. I neither shot myself nor tried to wrestle the computer in the hopes of speeding things up, and of course I didn't do the unthinkable (leaving the damn thing alone). No, I did something in its own way infinitely worse.
I decided that the time had come for me to create a blog.
In years to come, when I've long since gone all the way and become both metrosexual, grown up and things that are even worse, I may look back on this moment and think "That's when you stepped off the track. This is where it went wrong."
But be that as it may. I am now the proud (or maybe not so proud after all) owner of "Bored". And hopefully I'll never write another entry, but knowing myself and my habit of impulse shopping computer games, chances are slim.
And now, NWNUpdate tells me that it spent 0:21:07 updating my game. This means I probably spent 15 minutes of that making "Bored". And no more shall I spend right now.
After all - 15 minutes of fame is all we're supposed to get, right?
